  • Opinion: I-186 will hurt taxpayers

    Updated Aug 1, 2018

There's an old saying that, "If it can't be grown or raised, it must be mined." In Montana-where mining is among our largest economic drivers and our state motto is Oro y Plata (gold and silver)-mining plays a critical role in sustaining communities and families across Montana. I-186, the misleading initiative that claims to promote "responsible" mining, is backed by a coalition of out-of-state environmental groups, and if successful in November, would stop future mines. The...

  • My Smart Mouth: The Allure of Other People's Junk

Hope Quay, Blackfoot Valley Dispatch|Updated Aug 1, 2018

What is it about other people's junk that so enthralls us? I was asking myself that question last Friday as my family and I began our second circuit around Lincoln's annual flea market, eagerly seeking treasure. Flea markets crop up all over the world, bazaars made up of a variety of vendors selling cheap and used items, collectibles, antiques, and specialty food and beverages. The decidedly un-glamorous term "flea market" likely comes from the French marché aux puces, a...

  • Old Habits Die Hard

    Dick Geary|Updated Aug 1, 2018

Old habits die hard. The nights are getting chillier, now, and even though I haven't hunted in over twenty years, I still find myself thinking about the coming hunting season. This came from my father, as hunting was his main, if not his only, passion. The season opens near the middle of October, but beginning the first part of September he would start worrying about having tracking snow on opening day. In the 1950's until the 80's, elk were both scarce and wild. Many good hun...

In a press release late Monday afternoon, Sen. The announcement included a $95,400 grant for construction of a taxiway at the Lincoln Airport. • It's Drying time again

    Zach Muse, LVFR|Updated Aug 1, 2018

The tremendous amounts of rain we got this spring and early summer are gonna come back to haunt us. We have tons of grass. Tall, tall grass. And its drying out fast, and with just the tiniest spark and a little breeze, it can ignite and chew up some acreage quick and in a hurry. And of course, we still have all the red and dead in the hills that is always looming over us. We are obviously having a later start to fire season than last year, but pretty much on par for the...

  • Aaron Teasdale, High Country News|Updated Aug 1, 2018

This story is part of The Montana Gap project, produced in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network. The winds of Montana's Rocky Mountain Front buffet the empty Dupuyer Elementary School. At one time the grasslands around it teemed with family-run ranches and Dupuyer, Montana, was the heart of its region. In 1966 there were 63 students. In 2015, only one remained, with a lone teacher to instruct him. It shocked no one when the school shuttered last year. Welcome to...  Website

  • Fire destroys cabin near Landers Fork Bridge Monday

Roger Dey, Blackfoot Valley Dispatch|Updated Aug 1, 2018

An early morning fire destroyed a cabin on Copper Creek Road near the Landers Fork Bridge Monday morning. A neighbor a few miles away reported the blaze at 6:45 a.m., thinking it was a wildfire. A crew with the Montana Department of Natural Resources responded and Lincoln Volunteer Fire Chief Zach Muse headed up shortly after the DNRC sent an engine out. Shortly after he got out of town Muse began picking up the DNRC's radio traffic, and it became clear it wasn't a wildfire....

  • Bushwackers under new ownership

Roger Dey, Blackfoot Valley Dispatch|Updated Aug 1, 2018

Leona Cannon thought Dan Lerum was training her to be the new manager of Bushwackers over the winter, but by March he still hadn't given her an answer. So she asked for one. "I went to him... and asked 'are you going to make me manager? Am I wasting my time? How are we gonna do this?'" she said. "He said 'why would I make you manager?' I kind of lost it, then he said, 'when I could sell it to you?' That's what started the whole process." Just a couple weeks ago, Leona and her...

Roger Dey, Blackfoot Valley Dispatch|Updated Aug 1, 2018

The Federal Aviation Administration honored Charlie Sherman at the Lincoln Airport Open House last weekend with an award honoring him for several decades of safe flying. Jeff Vercoe, a Lincoln resident and pilot who works for the FAA as the Safety Program manager, presented Sherman with the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, which recognizes pilots who have flown for 50 years without any violations or license revocations on his record. Vercoe said it's considered the highest...

  • Guest Editorial: Working together in Lincoln for a bright future

    Updated Jul 31, 2018

Recently, a group of media took flight with University of Montana professor Rick Graetz to take in the stunning landscape of the southern Crown of the Continent area, centered on Lincoln. This flight highlighted Graetz’s effort to map, explore, and include this landscape of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest into the coveted Crown of the Continent, which could bring an economic boost for Lincoln. With increased visitors to the area, that tourism influx could assist in cushioning and leveling out the historic b...
