  • Road trips and roller skates

    Dick Geary|Updated Nov 28, 2018

Back in the 1950's people didn't travel much. The vehicles of the day weren't that reliable, tires weren't dependable, and the roads were difficult. Our maternal grandmother lived in Deer Lodge, 50 miles distant from Helmville, and a trip to visit her was a big event. Once a summer we spent a week or so in town, where our mother could renew childhood friendships and we kids could make them. Four of the six of us were born in four and a half years time, with two more coming a...

    Hope Quay, BVD|Updated Nov 28, 2018

Ovando's annual Old West Christmas Fest wouldn't be complete without "Cowboy Claus" and his trusty horse, St. Nick. St. Nick has become a favorite of kids and families who come from the Ovando area and neighboring communities to browse the wares of the craft bazaar, take part in family-friendly activities, and have their photo taken with Cowboy Claus, Santa's Montana cousin. An appropriately fuzzy and somewhat diminutive blond gelding with a gentle demeanor, St. Nick belongs...

  • Mountaintop Musings: Knowing God's word

    Dave Caroll|Updated Nov 28, 2018

One of the greatest chapters in the Bible is Psalm 119. It is an acrostic poem that exalts and praises God’s Holy and Majestic, Live-giving and Life-changing Word. An acrostic is a Hebrew poem that runs through the Hebrew alphabet, and has (in this case) eight lines whose first word starts with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Aleph. The next eight lines start with a word whose first letter is in Hebrew Beth, and so on. That is a neat way in which the Jews were guided to write some of the Psalms. It was, I am told a...

When the Montana Logging Association needed to find a 30-foot Christmas Tree for the Montana State Capital this year, they turned to Lincoln-based logger Wayne Sherrill for help. Sherrill, who said he's been a member of the MLA for about 20 years, found the perfect Douglas on the McDonald Family Ranch near Canyon Creek, where he and his sons, Jared and Jesse, have spent much of the year working on logging and thinning projects.
