Lynx vs. Drummond Trojans lurches to a five set tiebreaker

With a blizzard coming any minute, Lincoln volleyball fans used their last nice day to turn out and cheer for the Junior High ladies on Thursday, Sept. 26 as they faced our local area opponent, the Drummond Trojans.

The "A team" of older 7th and 8th grade players came out revved up and ready to romp.

The first set showcased lots of teamwork plays, setting the ball and assisting one another. Even though Kylee Copenhaver and Krymzen Dempster had most of the stellar stats, they were generous with the ball and helped the other ladies to make successful volleys.

Dempster slapped an amazing string of 13 overhand serves in the opening set and the Lady Lynx led all the way to a 25 - 14 win. The squad was on a roll.

Set II was more of a struggle. The score was tied up nine times in a back and forth duel that went to the wire, 25-25, until the Lincoln gals broke away to post another win, 27 - 25. Whew! The fans were getting their money's worth.

Sets III and IV went to the Trojans 10- 25 and 8 - 15 to set up the final tie breaking set V. Once again Dempster had a run of knock out serves and the volleys were fierce but Drummond squeaked out the win, 11 - 15.

Copenhaver used her height to hammer 13 spikes during the five sets, Dempster had five and Miyah Davis spiked two.

The "B team" of 4th, 5th and 6th grade ladies had a more difficult contest, losing in three straight sets, 18 - 25, 13 - 15, 21 - 25, but their big smiles and exuberant energy captured the pure joy of the game. Claire Gilbert scored three ace serves, Remi Dietz and Kaitlyn Brown had two aces each.

Drummond has a future volleyball phenom in star #15 Abby Boyd who played every minute of all eight A and B squad sets. Some Lincoln fans thought Boyd must have been an older "ringer" sent in to avenge their loss to the Lincoln B squad three weeks ago. Alas, Boyd will be around for a few more years. She is only in the 5th grade!
