From My Perspective: Checking In

So, how are you doing?

This seems to be the question I ask most nowadays, because for me, checking in with people has become more important than ever and what I’m doing a lot of these days.

Checking in with family, friends, loved ones, and even people I don’t know very well. Now, it’s not the typical way I would have done it prior to recent events. Before, it was more of an in-person thing, you know, standing face-to-face asking someone, “How are you hanging in with everything?” Now, my cell phone – which I swore I wanted to get rid of – is a handy tool I use more than ever to touch base with people to see how they’re doing. Texts, instant messages, emails, and yes, even telephone calls. We’ve even come up with new innovative ways to stay connected to groups and events from a distance. A knitting group I belong to in Billings - and normally where I would only see them now a couple of times a year - has set up Zoom meetings to gather twice a week, to see each other’s faces and check-in with one another.

One of the other cool things is I also have people reaching out to check in on me and my family. People I’d even lost track of, or those who are close and I haven’t talked to in a while, are reaching out. Making sure we’re all okay has taken on a new meaning and importance from what I can tell.

I guess, if looking at things through my positive nature, one of the relatively good things about this whole self-isolation business is that I’m reconnecting with people and appreciating the time to do so.

So, I’ll ask again… “How are you doing?”

Are you being checked in on and are you checking in with people in your life? Do you or someone you know need a check-in? If so, reach out to me and I’ll add you, or them, to my check-in list.

Remember, together we can take care of one another, and together, we’ll get through this craziness in our lives.
