Lady Lynx clobber WSS Hornets

Senior star Maggie Jorgensen sank the first bucket against the White Sulphur Springs lady Hornets Friday, and that was as close as the Hornets ever got to catching the wily, confident Lady Lynx.

The totals at the half were 17 - 4 and the only question still in the air was how long Coach Ken Lumpkin would leave his starters in, even as they got in foul trouble early.

"I left them in on purpose," Lumpkin said. "I'm teaching them a slide foot method of defense instead of always swatting with their hands. When Maggie and Alexis (Cannon) were confined by the Hornets double-team strategy, the team had to rely on body and foot position to defend the W.S.S. ladies instead of drawing more fouls by reaching in."

The award for 'most frustrated player of the night' went to Alexis Cannon who was triple-teamed the whole time. With her towering, six-foot height and intuitive sense of the game, Cannon was only able to sink two points in the contest from her post position, instead of her usual double digits. But she got her revenge in being a take-no-prisoners aggressor under the basket with ten rebounds.

The Hornet coverage, focused on containing the usual high scorers, opened the door for Tanea Reisch to have a fairly open shot on most possessions and she did not disappoint. Reisch, top shooter of the night with 19 points, had the game of her life and a senior year memory that will last a long time.

"It was amazing," said Reisch, "Everybody was working together and getting in the groove. We've been working on our conditioning and we felt strong and confident."

The 43 - 18 win says it all.

Maggie Jorgensen was the steal queen with nine thefts and ten rebounds, followed up by freshman hustler Alyvia Blotkamp who added two points, five steals and five rebounds. Experienced Senior Carly Templeton contributed five points and a lot of tough determination in keeping the ball moving around in the offense and encouraging the younger players to step up their defending skills.

By the fourth period, all the supporting players had their chance to take the floor. Sophomore Lindsey Weisner scored two points, and juniors Makenzie Storey and Maya Whittenberg showed the crowd that they can play the game, too, when called up. Jenna Templeton, a freshman who shows a lot of promise, also came in during the last period. Junior Sage Kamps was dressed out but didn't play most of the game to give her injured ankle a rest.

Next up for all the Lynx high school teams is Friday, Jan. 25 against Victor, beginning at 3 p.m. with ladies and men's JV and varsity at 5:30 p.m. The next day, Saturday, Jan. 26, is another home stand featuring the Clark Fork combine starting at 1:30 p.m. for the JV and 4 p.m. for the varsity.
