Legion debuts latest donation to Post 9 at Lincoln Bike Rally

A recent donation to Lincoln American Legion Post 9 made its debut at the Lincoln Bike Rally last weekend.

The 12-foot, double-axle trailer, donated by the family of Bill Whittenberg, was on display at the Wheel Inn, where Post 9 sold bratwursts as a fundraiser for an American Legion motorcycle-related cause.

Post 9 commander Rick Foreman said after Whittenberg passed away earlier this year, his wife no longer had a use for the trailer. Lonnie Cox talked to her about the possibility of donating it and she agreed, with the stipulation that the Legion put Whittenberg's name on the trailer as a memorial to him.

Foreman said the Legion had been looking for a trailer to use to haul their flags and honor guard equipment for their appearance in parades, and for use as a shelter when they sell tickets during skijoring and provide hot chocolate at Race to the Sky.

Foreman said a large American Legion emblem is on order and will be added to the side of the trailer soon.

The American Legion was raising money for the American Legion Legacy Run, an annual motorcycle ride by the American Legion Riders associated with the National Convention. This year's ride runs from Lady Lake, Fla. to the legions headquarters in Indianapolis for the 101st annual American Legion convention.

The American Legion Riders raise money for several causes, but the legacy Run serves as a fundraiser for the Legacy Scholarship fund that provides scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel killed since Sept. 11, 2001 and post 9/11 veterans with a 50 percent or higher disability rating.
