Hey Howdy Hey

The Roost

Just wanted to give out a Big Hey Howdy Hey of thanks to Rick and Dot Porter for putting a roof over people’s heads for over 30 years now, here in Lincoln.

They originally moved here in 1985 and had a little cabin in the hills out of town. They took over the Roost in 1988, the year of the big fire in the Scapegoat.

The Roost got its name from Paul Roos who used to own it when he had an outfitting and fly shop there. Paul had lived there in one of the oldest cabins, the bigger one in the middle built in 1910. There are eight cabins in all there. A couple of the cabins came from the Mike Horse Mine.

Before moving to Lincoln, Rick worked in the glass business in Bozeman and in Great Falls, and he brought his glazing business to Lincoln and recently retired from it.

Many folks have lived at the Roost over the years. On average, people live there about eight to ten years and some even longer. Dot is kind of known as “The Little Mother” there. She says it’s like one big family.

Some of the tenants who may be older and such, she asks them to open their curtains in the morning, so she knows they are okay. They let her know if they are leaving for any amount of time, so she doesn’t worry.

Rick jokingly said, “It’s like the song Hotel California where you can check out, but you can’t never leave.”

With Lincoln not always being an easy place to find somewhere to live, many folks have been blessed to call the Roost their home.
