Lynx overwhelmed by White Sulphur Springs Hornets

The round ball was not falling through the net for the Lincoln Lynx Friday night, Jan. 24.

Despite a flurry of shots going up from the hometown key, only a few of them actually saw the bottom of the hoop. The 61 - 81 loss was a bitter pill to swallow for senior star Nathan Brown, who posted 38 points alone, including an 80 percent success rate from the free throw line.

Even Larry Bird couldn't win a game all by himself. The Lynx team members were also missing the buckets and energy of Brodi Henderson, usually one of the top point men, was not dressed out for this game.

The run-and-gun fast action of the Hornets put the Lynx squad on its heels, causing missed baskets from every direction: lay ups, base lines, stop and pops and three pointers from beyond the arc. Even the full court passes rarely found their mark.

However, to the delight of the fans, Brown put on an amazing show, making shots while falling down, getting knocked down, and sinking them from NBA range despite double (and sometimes triple) coverage. He dished off quite a few assists to Ryan Greenwood and Trenton Grantier, but they weren't enough to get over the hump of the lopsided scoreboard.

Greenwood posted ten points, Grantier added seven, defensive standout Brad Howard contributed four and young Haden Dempster came up with two.

White Sulphur Springs brought fifteen varsity players to the contest, facing off against eight Lynx players, three of whom were only eighth graders. It was one of those opportunities that 'build character' as they say, and the Lincoln men played hard right up to the end. The grateful fans sent the team into the locker room with a hearty round of applause for giving it their all. It's not the same as winning, but it lets the tired team know that we are all in this together
