Lincoln Volleyball's "War of the Generations"

The last scheduled volleyball match of the year for the Lincoln Little Lynx on Oct.15 was canceled by the Drummond Lady Trojans because of their exposure to COVID-19.

But coach Danielle Fry didn't want to end the season on such a disappointing note, so she scheduled a Friday night shoot out between her young, skilled and enthusiastic Junior High players vs. the older, terrified-of-being-embarrassed Moms and Dads of the Lady Lynx.

To keep the 'players vs. parents' theme going, Mrs. Fry's father, Bill Cyr, agreed to coach the moms and dads, although actual evidence of coaching from the parents' bench was not very evident. The fact that Mr. Cyr is a medically trained first responder was probably the main reason he was nominated to be the coach for the oldsters.

From the first serve until the end of the four sets, the A team ladies of the younger squad proved to be equal to the task of defeating their parents. Two of the four sets were played to a tie after long intense volleys, with the parents barely squeaking out a win each time. If the Lady Lynx had played only their A team, they would have taken their parents to task, but Coach Fry often put her B team players on the court to give them more experience, and it was clear that the 4th and 5th grade girls still had a lot of polishing to do on their volleyball skills.

The evening was full of laughs and cat calls to the parents, who avoided the shame of injury and a jeer that sounded like, "Help, I've fallen, and I can't get up!" The beleaguered referee, Shane Smith, father of Hailey Smith, was admonished several times by his daughter and her team for calling foot faults that are not applicable for Jr Hi teams. "Get with it, Dad!"

The parents' four set shut out went down in this season's history as the most hilarious volleyball game of the year and several fans in the bleachers were overheard suggesting that it become an annual event. It might even turn into a fundraiser ... parents could pay top dollar to be excused!
