Halloween Carnival

Lincoln-area kids had a second go at Halloween Nov. 13, at the rescheduled Lincoln PTSO Halloween Carnival in the Lincoln School gym.

Despite the fact the Halloween festivities were delayed by two weeks thanks to a COVID-19 outbreak at the school, Danielle Barnett with the PTSO said it was one of the things they just wanted to be able to do.

"We were a little worried about whether people would want to come," she said, and though there weren't quite as many kids in costume as in some past years, the gym was alive with youngsters taking part in the games as their parents egged them on.

The carnival, which has been a Halloween staple in Lincoln for years, gave kids a chance to show off their costumes, play games and win prizes and treats and maybe, for the stout hearted, get in a few scares in the school's haunted house set up by the high school students.

Barnett said the Senior Class ginned up scares in the "Lincoln Asylum" this year, while the junior high students helped with running the games.

Barnett said they made a change this year with the games. Instead of handing out prizes at the games themselves, they gave out tickets that could be redeemed at a prize table, giving winners more variety to choose from.

Many of the prizes this year were, including all the prizes at the carnival's Roulette wheel came from Jesse Sallin, who passed away Nov. 7. Barnett said Sallin, who was instrumental in creating the Halloween Carnival years ago, came to some of the PTSO's planning meetings and donated six boxes of miscellaneous knickknacks, stuffed animals, ornaments, dishware and trinket boxes that could be used as prizes. One young lady proudly showed off a nice teacup and saucer set she'd won.

The carnival also featured a raffle for a quilt donated by Sallin, featuring an oversized image of label from a candy staple of the 80's: "Big League Chew" bubble gum.
