The "Glory Days" Alums relive the lime light

They were great once, long ago.

With dreams of past high school victories dancing like sugar plums in their memories, the Lincoln alums who took the football field Saturday night, Oct. 15 expected to romp over their younger and slimmer sons and nephews on the current Lincoln Lynx JV squad. After all, they had been champions in 'The Day' !

And to make sure none of the old Glory Days players became seriously injured, the contest was Flag Football, not the rough and tumble tackle football that the Lynx are used to. No pads, no helmets, and plenty of Ben Gay for the older guys.

The outcome, a 50 - 34 victory for the high school boys, was actually closer than the score would lead you to believe. The Lynx coaches warned the boys at half-time, "These fellows came to win and they are fired up. Don't get over confident."

The Glory Days just missed a TD by one yard in the second half and a few lucky breaks going to the high school team made the final score look lopsided.

It was a fun night for fans and both teams, who were often laughing on the line of scrimmage before the snaps. But, holding up their macho image, the Glory Days men gave every play their best effort, even when their receivers slipped on the dewy grass and hit the turf, untouched by the Lynx defenders. The crowd was heard to cheer, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up."

The Lincoln fans of both teams filled the side lines, seeing friends they had lost touch with and keeping the concession stand hopping. The weather was balmy and a breath-taking red and purple sunset made the evening perfect.

The Lincoln Lynx team won't have such an easy battle in their next game, Saturday, Oct. 22 at the North Star combine at1 p.m. No Ben Gay in the first aid kit for that day.
