Obituary: Herf Ingersoll

Wilmer Zane Ingersoll, of Wolf Creek, MT died in his home at Hunter's Pointe on July 2, 2023. He was 93 years old.

Wilmer was better known as Herf. Herf was born on January 12, 1930 in Helena MT to Sam and Alice Ingersoll. He was raised in Helena and graduated from Helena High School. He served with the U.S. Army two years during the Korean War, putting in time in Europe. He married Colleen Steinbach on June 19, 1951. They lived on the family ranch north of Wolf Creek, MT for 71 years. He enjoyed ranch life and was loved by all in the community. Herf was a member of the American Legion in Augusta, MT. He took tickets for the annual American Legion Rodeo and it was there that he was discovered by the Philip Morris company. Herf became one of the original Marlboro Men and his pictures were on billboards and in magazines all over the world.

Herf loved golf, playing cards, and most recently enjoyed bingo. He was a family man and loved his children and grandchildren deeply. He moved to Helena and lived at Hunter's Pointe for the last year. He made many friends and will be missed by the staff and residents. His family would like to thank Hunter's Pointe staff and residents for the wonderful care and friendship he received.

Herf is survived by his wife Colleen Steinbach Ingersoll, sister Linda Smith of Gilbert Arizona, daughter Janet Ingersoll Hoffman of Lincoln MT, son Ron and his wife Linda Ingersoll of Wolf Creek MT, grandchildren Dustin Ingersoll (Rachel)of Wolf Creek MT and Chase Ingersoll of Helena MT, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Herf is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Milton, and his sister Betty.
