Heritage Tourism Council recognizes National Historic Preservation Month

The City of Helena/Lewis and Clark County Heritage Tourism Council (HTC) is recognizing National Historic Preservation Month with proclamations and a historic photo display. The Board of County Commissioners are scheduled to issue a Proclamation at their regular 9 a.m. Tuesday meeting on May 14. The Proclamation for the Helena City Commission is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, May 20. Both public meetings are in the Commission Chamber, room 330, on the third floor of the City-County Building.

Visitors to the City-County Building are invited to view the large photo banners on the first and second floors through the month of May. The photo banners showcase Helena's architectural exuberance of the late 1880's, 1890's and early 1900's.

The Penn Block and Bristol Hotel, Cosmopolitan Hotel, Beveredge Block, Central Beer Hall, City Hall, Fire and Police Departments, City Jail are displayed on the first floor. Photos include two street scenes of Main Street: one looking from Wall Street in 1905 is displayed on the first floor, and Main Street looking up Grand Street circa 1908 is on the second floor. The Union Bank and Trust/Merchants National Bank, Montana National Bank, Grand Central Hotel, Holter Hardware, Gans and Kein, and the Novelty Block are on the second floor.
