Lincoln School's Pink Week came to a close on Saturday, Oct. 12. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, students wore pink throughout the week, and athletes at Friday nights Volleyball game wore pink shirts, pink socks and had pink bows in their hair.
Each year, the teams have a tradition to "Play for a Cure" and honor someone in the community who has been battling cancer. Last year, the team honored Bill Whittenberg, and this year they chose to honor Nancy Bickel, who is going through a second round of cancer treatments.
Between the Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball games, the girls presented Bickel with the pink game ball signed by all of the players. They also gave her a vase of flowers and the Play for a Cure sign.
Assistant Volleyball Coach Joanie Templeton explained that each year the team picks someone they want to play for, and this year they chose Bickel, who is also student and player Nikki Snyder's Aunt. Bickel had no idea the girls were going to pay tribute to her and was surprised by the presentation. Although this has been a tough battle she smiled as she received the honor with her daughter Jennifer by her side.
As each girl from the team gave her a hug, they walked away with tears in their eyes.
