March events at your Lincoln Library

The Lincoln Library has several upcoming events through the month of March.

Thursday, March 12, 7-9 p.m. - Book Club - Special date! It's been rescheduled from the usual meeting time of the first Thursday to avoid a conflict with Dueling Guitars. The club will be selecting our next six books at this meeting and anyone interested in reading and/or discussing books on a variety of topics is welcome. New members are always invited!

Friday, March 13, 12 p.m. - Lunch and a Movie - We'll watch Ant-man and the Wasp (rated PG-13) and enjoy pizza. Open to all; no charge.

Friday, March 13, 4 p.m. - Genealogy Workshop - We'll discuss using Library resources, including Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest, to perform genealogy research. Attendees are invited to bring information about their own families to use in practice searches.

Saturday, March 14, 1-3 p.m. - Crafternoon - Enjoy an afternoon activity for adults. A different craft activity is featured each month. This month, try out leather embossing. Anyone interested in presenting their craft at an upcoming Crafternoon is invited to contact Kate Radford at the Library at 362-4300.

In addition to the above Library sponsored events, a Digital Defense Workshop, presented by Victor Johnson is slated for Monday, March 12, Monday, March 19, and Monday, April 2, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Library's Community Room.

During these workshops, attendees will learn how to use the internet and your digital devices without being surveilled, tracked, hacked or jacked and to maintain their privacy and personal data integrity. All three sessions are scheduled for two hours, with the first half featuring the presentation and the second half a question & answer session.

The March 12 workshop will cover issues around privacy, anonymity and how, as a society, we are being surveilled by both business and government through the use of IP address, cookies, trackers, beacons, fingerprinting, location, automated license plate readers, facial recognition, financial records and patterns.

The March 19 workshop will focus on technologies and behaviors one can employ to reduce or eliminate being an unwitting data donor and take back their privacy.

The April 2 workshop will go over implementation details. Attendees will bring their own device for hands on sessions on how to use methods and technological solutions to assure anonymity to preserve their privacy.
