From My Perspective: Arrivals and Departures

Since I moved to Lincoln in 2008-2009, it has always seemed to me it’s been a transient place with many new arrivals and sad departures. Of course, there are long-time families who have come to Lincoln, made it their home, and have been here for the duration. I’ve often heard of those folks as the “backbone of our town.”

Recently, my best friend relocated from Pennsylvania and is now calling Lincoln home. Montana is different, but she is liking and embracing how things work here. The mountains behind her home are a thing of wonder to her, while the quiet calm and the landscape are giving her peace. I remember when I first moved here having that same wonder lust. I’d never seen anything like it in all my life. I still, to this day, find myself in awe of all that surrounds me here in this amazing state. As she settles in and makes Lincoln her new home, I invite you to join me in welcoming her to our little town. Her name is Gwen, and if you see her around, please give her a big hello!

So with a new arrival to Lincoln, and I’m sure my friend isn’t the only recent newcomer, there are also going to be departures. Two very special people come to mind.

Most of you are aware Rhonda McClure is leaving us and heading back to her home state of Wisconsin to be with her family. Some of you, OK, a lot of you, even came out to her farewell party a couple of weeks ago. The sheer number of people who came out to honor her and wish her well should give everyone an idea of how many lives she has touched and what a blessing she has been to Lincoln. She’s such a light in our town; kind-hearted with a smile for everyone.

Rhonda, you will be missed, and I know most people will agree with me in wishing you the best of everything as you start your next journey.

Another departure at the end of the month is our own “Hey, Howdy, Hey” guy, Jim Oly. He’s decided to take some time away and spend it with Trooper, his canine sidekick and companion. Sometimes, that’s just what people need – time away.

Most of you knew Jim from even before his upbeat column in the paper for his fun antics. Everything from riding a bike with a toy car trailing behind, to his colorful vehicles, and his cowboy hat atop his head while riding a lawnmower, and his antler-adorned bicycle. He always has a smile for everyone in town, cares deeply for the kids in our community and recognizes the good in people. His last point has been very evident over the last several months in his newspaper column. I feel like I’ve only recently gotten to know Jim better, and again, while I’m sad about his departure, I give him major kudos for following his heart to do what’s best for him.

Jim, you will also be greatly missed – and I hope you know what an inspiration you’ve been to me and so many others. I hope you know that despite the meanness in others, you’ve chosen to take the high road and spread laughter and joy to those around you.

Lincoln is my home, and I love it here. I welcome all the new arrivals and wish those departing for new adventures all the happiness you can find in them.
